Saturday 6th August 2011: Hello everyone,
Swayze Buddy Nadine from New York State has passed along news of a lovely article that was included in the Newsletter of the Stanford Cancer Center - now called the Stanford Cancer Institute. Nadine wrote:
"It's been a while since I've written but I still continue to keep up with all news on or about Patrick and Pancreatic cancer research. Just thought I would let you and the fans know about a recent article about Patrick and the Pancreas Cancer Research Fund . I recently recieved the Stanford Cancer Center Newsletter with a beautiful picture of Patrick and Lisa and a small article where Lisa states, "It was Patrick's deepest wish that his illness and brave fight somehow help others ." It also mentions that gifts to the Swayze Fund have come from his fans around the world and donors whose life has been touched by pancreas cancer.
I'm so deeply touched every time I read of the monies being donated in Patirck's name dedicated to finding a cure for pancreatic cancer. Patrick will always be remembered for his courageous fight , his beautiful spirit and the kind and compassionate person that he was. Go Patrick, We love you, you will never be forgotten."
Thank you Nadine. Nadine also sent a scan of the full article which you can see here.

Further to our news item of 8th June on this page, you can read a full report and see a lovely picture of Lisa here. Thanks to Swayze Buddy Sue from Michigan for the alert.

We have heard from our dear friend Cami about the young boy Denali Botolino who continues his brave fight against pancreatic cancer supported by the love of his family and friends.
Cami wrote:
"My Family,
I have not sent an email regarding Denali for a long time. I have been a little selfish and caught up in my drama lately. I have been keeping updated on his progress and my heart breaks for all of them. I ask that you keep Denali, Donna, Ricky, and their children in your prayers or if there is anything that you may know of that might be of assistance to them, please share it with me. I would like to encourage each of you in your own way to reach out to the Botolino's. We have all been in situations where life is extremely hard but what keeps us going is friends, family, and random acts of compassion that touch our hearts. This family is battling a beast, pancreatic cancer. Let them no that they are not alone and let's pay it forward. My love to each of you and I thank you for being there for me and for being there for them. Please put them on your prayer list at church and keep them in your prayers as well. You may forward this to your church or friends if you are comfortable. My heart breaks for them but I choose to hang onto hope.
Love,
Cami"

We've heard from Hamish Opray about a Charity Screening of Point Break in Melbourne, Australia. Hamish wrote:
"I’m writing from Melbourne Australia where a group of us have organised a 20th Anniversary Screening of the film Point Break, with all proceeds raised from the event being donated to the Patrick Swayze Pancreas Cancer Research Fund which we discovered existed through your official web site.
We are hoping to raise between $7,000 and $8,000 for the cause, and extensive PR and invitations are being circulated through e-mail, Facebook and local media in Melbourne to attract as many people to the event as we can. The cinema we have booked holds 500 people, but we may find ourselves in a situation where we book additional cinemas in the complex if demand is high to support this event. The event is scheduled to be held on Tuesday 12th July 2011, exactly 20 years to the day since world-wide release of the film.

We have received a request from Swayze Buddy Cami to ask for your support:
"Dear Swayze Buddies,
As you know, I work to help raise awareness and funds to help end pancreatic cancer. This cancer has taken three dear people from my life. I recently came across a request for a prayer for a nine year old boy named Denali. He has pancreatic cancer. I was floored and in shock. However, his courage and his families commitment and strength have showed me that great things can happen when we work together.
On Monday, September 13th, 2010, he will be having the whipple procedure done in New York. I am asking you to wear purple that day in honor of him and his family. In addition if you would light a candle and say prayers throughout the day or just think of him, it would be appreciated. Let this be your act of kindness and compassion on Monday. It is one of the greatest and most simple things you can do for people.
Thank you for your time, your love, and your prayers for Denali. I sense a miracle around the corner. Please share this with your family and friends.
You can check for updates on Please Pray for Denali Botolino.
If you would take a picture of yourself in purple and send it to me at clbrown1967@gmail.com and I will post it on his facebook. I think it would be neat for Denali and his family to see people encouraging him around the world. Let's give him some of Patrick's fighting spirit!
Love,
Cami"

Thank you to Cami Brown who has been in touch with a special request for help. Here is the message passed along by Cami:
"Margaret, would you post this on your webpage, they can find this on facebook.
Dear Friends of the Denali Botolino Prayer Page,
The Botolino Family is traveling from Florida to New York and is in desperate need for a place to stay in New York City near the Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital while nine-year old Denali undergoes surgery for Pancreatic Cancer .They will be arriving in NY September 8th and staying until the end of September give or take a few day's.The American Cancer Society told the family that due to the economy, there is no financial assistance available through them for housing. The Ronald McDonald House cannot help because Ricky and Donna will have their three other children with them. The family is due to leave Florida in five days and they don't know where they will be staying yet. I know it's a stretch but . . . it's worth asking. So if you know of someone in New York with a vacation home, or maybe someone that works at a hotel that can get a discounted rate or a very generous soul, or a non-profit organization who might be willing to help Please Contact Donatella Botolino. Thank you all for your continued prayers and support.....
Warmest Regards,
Dina Buzzanga DeMarino"
If anyone is able to help this family with accommodation, please write to us at the fan club as a matter of urgency and we will forward to Cami.

"Hi Margaret!
I wasn't sure if you knew or not but wanted to let you know that we are
honoring Lisa at this year's An Evening with the Stars gala, our signature
gala that we do every year in Los Angeles. Here is the link to the honoree
page: http://pancan.org/ewts10/honoree.html
We are also honoring Cindy Landon, Michael Landon's wife at the event as
well.
This will be an amazing evening. Let me know if you have any fans that are
interested and I can send you more event information. One of the reasons
that I wanted to let you know is because we do a beautiful tribute book and
I didn't know if maybe some of the fans might want to do pages for Lisa. I
will attach the sponsorship page that has the info for the tribute book.

Saturday 10th July 2010: Hello everyone,
Swayze Buddy Baerbel from Germany has been in touch with an update about the fundraiser that was held in Berlin in March for the German Cancer Help Association.
Baerbel said, "Now I found the snippet attached in the magazine of the German cancer help association. The English translation is as follows:
Fund-Raiser „Dirty Dancing“
On 28th March 2010 the Theater at the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin made a special performance: In memory of the actor Patrick Swayze, who died of pancreatic cancer in autumn 2009, the cast of “Dirty Dancing – The original live on stage” (see photo above) performed in front of a sold-out auditorium. The proceeds went to the Deutsche Krebshilfe (German Cancer Help Association). The tickets had been sold via hotline – everyone calling in set one’s price and thus the amount of the donation by oneself. In total, 44,000.00 € have been collected through this remarkable campaign for people suffering from cancer. "
Wonderful news Baerbel!

LIONSGATE SUPPORTS DIRTY DANCING FESTIVAL
Leading Film Studio and Others Offering Support for Festival
LAKE LURE, N.C. (June 22, 2010): Lionsgate, the leading independent filmed entertainment studio and owner of the rights to cult-classic Dirty Dancing, is now supporting the inaugural Dirty Dancing Festival at Lake Lure on September 17-18, 2010.
Last week, the Lionsgate Publicity Department posted the festival information to their official Dirty Dancing Facebook page that showcases an astounding 2,702,818 fans and counting. Since making the announcement, Facebook comments continue to pour in from ecstatic fans eager to attend the landmark celebration.
The Lionsgate Publicity department is saying the Dirty Dancing Festival at Lake Lure “sounds like a fantastic weekend” and event organizers are thrilled to have Lionsgate’s support.
“Having Lionsgate’s support is wonderful for our festival,” remarked Jo Beyersdorfer of JNB Marketing & Events in Los Angeles and co-director of the Dirty Dancing Festival at Lake Lure. “We are starting to see the excitement of our attendees, and they are beginning to see the size and scope of what this festival will be for years to come.”
Among other organizations, the official Patrick Swayze Fan Club has also joined the Dirty Dancing Festival bandwagon and is actively promoting the event on the club’s website.
The two-day festival, hosted by the Hickory Nut Gorge Chamber of Commerce, includes a lakeside film screening at Firefly Cove (where most of the movie was filmed), an afternoon family dance festival, and an elegant 1960s-inspired Time of Your Life Gala at Firefly Cove. Funds raised from the weekend will support the Isothermal Foundation Performing Arts Center, Hospice of Rutherford County and the Lake Lure Youth Center.

Diane Ihlefeld-Greenstein has been in touch with us asking for our support also to raise awareness of Pancreatic Cancer. Diane wrote:
"Hi,
My mother recently died of Pancreatic Cancer (Dec. 4, 2009). She designed a bracelet to raise awareness to this disease.
Her bracelets are called SWARM bracelets, (Barbara's SWARM-See Why Awareness Really Matters) ,we sell them to help raise awareness, communicate that early detection is the KEY, and donate the proceeds to the Rhode Island Home & Hospice Care Center's Free Care Program. My mother wanted to help fund this organization because they were so wonderful during her fight, and she couldn't imagine anyone not being able to benefit from them due to financial reasons.
At the time of her death we had sold 55 of these bracelets to family and friends. To date we are 13 away from 300! We are excited about this. That is 300 people spreading awareness to this unheard of disease.
We have a FaceBook page called "Barbara's SWARM" and a website:

Swayze Buddy Cami from California has written to us and asks for your
support:
Cami writes:
"Sue's Urchins" started in honor of my mother-in-law, Susan Brown, two years
ago in the Purple Stride Chicago Walk 2008. On February 27, 2006, she lost
her battle with pancreatic cancer. In my final moment with her, I walked
over and gave her a kiss. My heart felt that pain of knowing that I was
about to lose her. She is a woman I was blessed to call my mother-in-law,
who showed me everything about family, about love, about the Lord, and about
how to live life even in the most difficult of circumstances. I was walking
out of the room when I turned back to give her one more look, and she smiled
at me. She was going home to the Lord, and even though she was leaving us,
her smile made me feel at peace. It was in that moment that I knew she
would always be with us and that I would do what I could to continue the
battle against pancreatic cancer. I knew that the cancer took her from us,
but I know that it never took her spirit or her love of life.
I am reminded of my mother-in-law everyday when I see my son, Nate, smile at
me. I see that smile in her children: David, Amy, Allison, Melissa, and
Matt. I know that they see it in their children also. This smile lights up
a room and reminds me that there is always hope. It is that hope that keeps
our family together, and it is that hope that drives us to make a difference
in the fight against pancreatic cancer.
This was our beginning and also my time to honor my grandmother, my uncle,
and Patrick Swayze. These were people who had affected my life, left
footprints on my heart, and lost their life to pancreatic cancer. They all
have their own story, and I am grateful for the impact they had on my life,
if it was for a lifetime or for a moment, from the next room or from a great
distance.
I walk for my grandmother, Wilma Notson, who raised me and my brother so my
mom was able to work, provide a home, food, and clothing for her children.
She was a woman who taught me to always do my part, to be polite, to believe
in God, to be kind, to be strong, and to never give up. I walk for my
uncle, Lester Sergott, who I met only for a moment but who assured me that I
should never doubt that I was loved. It was then I learned that we all don't
love in the same way; some of us just do the best we can with what we have
left in our hearts. I walk for Patrick Swayze, I admired his work from a
distance, but I grew to respect him more as person than an actor when he and
his wife, Lisa, kindly, openly, and honestly shared with the world their
feelings and their fight against pancreatic cancer. It hit home for me, and
it let others who have fought this battle know that they were not alone. I
walk for Susan, my mother-in-law, where no words can describe how she
changed my life. I walk for my son because he has this cancer on both sides
of his family. I walk for my nieces and nephews. I walk for myself, my
sisters, and my brothers. I walk for those who are fighting this battle and
for those who have lost it.
My name is Cami Brown and I am the captain of team "Sue's Urchins", a family
made strong by one woman, a family and team committed to raising awareness
and raising funds, a family wanting to bring hope and make a difference in
this war against pancreatic cancer. I invite you to walk with us on
Saturday, May 1, 2010, pray with us, raise funds with us, raise awareness
with us, and I encourage you to KNOW IT! FIGHT IT! END IT! for me, for my
family, for those who are fighting their battle, and for those who have lost
their loved ones. Let Susan's smile be the hope that drives us all to make
a difference."
Thank you Cami and best wishes for your walk on May 1st.

Thursday 14th January 2010: Hello everyone,
We've heard from Pamela at PanCAN to remind us all that PanCAN needs your support once again. Here is Pamela's message:
"This Friday is the day that the voting begins!!! It only runs for 7 days so we really have to spread the word and get everyone to vote between January 15th-22nd.
We are very excited, because with everyone’s help we really feel that we have a good chance of securing the most votes and winning the $1 million for pancreatic cancer research.
We’d like to ask that all of Patrick’s fans please vote in his memory at:
www.vote2cure.com/patrickswayze ! Every vote counts and we only have 7 days so everyone needs to place their own vote and then ask their friends and family members to do the same.
$1 million for pancreatic cancer research could really change the course of history for this disease! Sometimes it’s just one new idea or concept that unlocks the door to the cure! You never know!
We are so thankful that you fans care enough to make a difference in Patrick’s memory!!!!
Tonight at 12:01am Eastern Time, the voting begins in the Chase Community Giving Campaign! The voting will continue through January 22nd.
Every vote counts so that we can win the $1 million for pancreatic cancer research as a tribute to Patrick Swayze! This money will make a significant impact in the fight against pancreatic cancer.
Please VOTE and ask ALL of your friends to vote too! We will probably need to have over 20,000+ votes to have a chance to land in first place. So please get your Facebook friends to pass it on to everyone they know!
Please post the following in your status every day of the campaign:
VOTE NOW to help win $1 million for pancreatic cancer research! www.vote2cure.com/patrickswayze
On behalf of the entire pancreatic cancer community, I thank you for your commitment and passion for the cause! Together, we WILL find a cure!

Tuesday 22nd December 2009: Hello everyone,

It is the December 28th issue and in the Tributes Section there is a page on Patrick with a nice picture plus an excerpt from "The Time of My Life". Sue says that also, in their advertisement for "PEOPLE Yearbook 2010", Patrick is one of the people on the cover. This issue hits newstands on Janaury 1, 2010. Thank you Sue and Jan.

Monday 21st December 2009: Hello everyone,
The Houston Film Critics Society has honoured Patrick with it's lifetime achievement award. Patrick's home town is Houston and I'm sure he would have been very proud to receive this honour. You can read a full report here.

For those of you who were unable to see GMTV on TV in the UK when Lisa spoke about trying to deal with her loss, you can see the video both on GMTV's website here and You Tube here.

Swayze Buddy Terry from California in the USA has written to tell us:
"Hi Margaret,
I just wanted to share the results which have been posted on the Facebook website (here). I know I voted for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, and apparently many others did as well because they made it to the top 100 charities, and will be receiving $25K. Isn't that terrific news? I'm so happy that they will be receiving the much needed funding. What a tribute to Patrick from his fans who voted for this charity."
Thanks Terry and well done to everyone who supported PanCAN through their voting on Facebook!
We've also had an update from Pamela at PanCAN with the exciting news and a request for your help once again! Pamela wrote:
"A huge thank you goes out to all of the members at the Official Patrick Swayze International Fan Club for their support and their votes in the Chase Community Giving Campaign in memory of Patrick! We have made it into the Top 100 with your help and will receive $25,000 and will move into the final round which will take place from January 15th - January 22nd. This final round is only 7 days long so we really need to push hard to get as many votes as possible during that time! The top prize is $1 million and we are going for the gold! $1 million will help to fund crucial research for pancreatic cancer so that hopefully, one day soon, no other life has to be cut short like Patrick's was. And no other wife will be left behind like Lisa Niemi to grieve for their loved one. We've made it this far because of all of YOU and we really need to count on YOU to vote again and spread the word starting January 15th! Thank you again, from the bottom of our hearts! It means the world to all of us who have lost loved ones to this awful disease!

Friday 27th November 2009: Hello everyone,
It was announced today by the Arabian Horse Foundation that a Scholarship has been set up in honour of Patrick and Lisa. Wonderful news! You can read more about it here.
We have been contacted by the Founder of PanCAN, Pamela Acosta Marquardt, who needs your help to get PanCAN into the top 100 charities, thereby giving them a chance to receive part of the $5 million that Chase Community Giving Campaign is giving way to charities!
Here is Pamela's message:
"The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is participating in the Chase Community Giving Campaign online at http://apps.facebook.com/chasecommunitygiving. Chase is going to be giving away a total of $5 million to charity.
Here is how it works:
- In round #1 they will determine the TOP 100 charities by the number of votes that each charity receives. Each of the TOP 100 will receive $25,000 AND go on to round #2
- In round #2, the very top charity with the most votes will receive $1 million and 5 runnerups will each receive $100,000.
We are calling upon anyone in the world who cares about pancreatic cancer to vote for us so that we can, hopefully, land in the TOP 100 and go on to the final round.
I was hoping that you might consider putting this out there to Patrick's fans so that they could vote in his honor. You have to be a member of Facebook to vote but it is very easy to sign up even if someone is not currently a member. It doesn't cost anyone a thing and there is a place to leave comments after you've voted.
This is a huge opportunity to not only get the pancreatic cancer cause out there but to actually win money to help fight this awful disease.
Please let me know what you think. The qualifying to be in the TOP 100 ends on December 11th so we don't have much time.
Thank you so much for your consideration!

Saturday 21st November 2009: Hello everyone,
With the passing of our dear friend and Honoree, Patrick Swayze, we had decided not to produce our usual Calendar, as a mark of respect. However, as November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month, we have discussed this with Lisa and she has given her blessing to us creating a 2010 Patrick Swayze Calendar as a fund raising project for The Patrick Swayze Pancreas Cancer Research Fund.
So, for every Calendar sold on our website, we shall donate £2 to The Patrick Swayze Pancreas Cancer Research Fund.
Like the previous two years, the Calendar will be A4 size, that's 21cms x 30cms (approx. 8" x 12") and will be printed in full colour on beautiful white card, spiral bound along the top and have one A4 page for each month, plus a lovely front cover page. There will be enough space on each date square to write notes of appointments etc. The copyrighted photos on the Calendar will include special Fan Club pictures of Patrick, some with Lisa.
If you would like to support The Patrick Swayze Pancreas Cancer Research Fund by purchasing our Calendar, please visit our Calendar order page here. All prices shown for the Calendar are in British £ sterling and are inclusive of postage and packaging charges to your destination. PayPal will automatically convert the British £ sterling to your chosen currency for your PayPal account records.
Last year we raised $832 for a major pancreatic cancer charity and with your help, we hope to be able to beat that total this year. Thank you for your support!
Also, Swayze Buddy Julia from Tennessee has written to us: "I found this website for Pancan we care - http://pancan.we-care.com/ It makes a donation to pancan when you buy through their site, from a lot of different sites. Amazon and ebay are a couple of them. Not sure if it works in all countries but there is a lot of fans in the USA that order christmas online. So why not help out Patrick's cause while you shop. Check it out and see what you think. Julia" (note from Margaret - I've written to we-care.com to find out if orders can be accepted by them from outside of the U.S.A. and Canada).
A great idea Julia! Thanks! So come on, get shopping now!
Julia also alerted us to a lovely magazine cover and article in Modern Arabian Horse magazine which you can preview here. Julia said, "303.652-4500 is the number (from the United States) and just press 0 for the operater and tell them you would like to order the Modern Arabian Horse Magazine with Patrick on the cover Oct/Nov issue.2009.for me it was $7.00 US Dollars." Thanks Julia! There may be international shipping charges is you are ordering from outside of the U.S.A.

I know he has many many more fans around the world who would love to light one if they knew about it. It takes about a day for your candle to be placed on the world map, so a bit of patience is needed. Notification of placement is sent to the participant." Click here to visit the site. Thanks Diane!

The challenge: Help the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network find 8,120 people to join us in the fight against pancreatic cancer to match the 8,120 people who will be diagnosed between now and the end of National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month this November. Let’s grow the community of support for those facing pancreatic cancer by growing the number of people who know about it and are committed to helping fight it and end it. For each person who is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer between now and the end of November we’ll add one more name to the list of people standing up for them.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll reach out to you with tools and information you can share with your friends and family—tools you can use to spread the word and raise awareness. By November we’ll have a community thousands strong that understands pancreatic cancer and is determined to know it, fight it and end it.
Add your name to this list, share the challenge with everyone you know, and ask them to do the same.
Together we can make a difference. It’s time. Pancreatic Cancer: Know it. Fight it. End it."
Thank you Cami.
In friendship,
Margaret.

I'm attaching a copy of our flier, as well as the link for the cool banner which the cinema has put on their web site, advertising the movie. If you could mention something on the fan web site, I'd sure appreciate it.
Thanks again for all you do. We'll all continue to keep Patrick and Lisa in our prayers.

Thank you Ellen for getting in touch and best wishes for a successful fundraising evening!

Also, we've been sent a link to a song about frisbees! Cindy wrote to us:
"The song is an ode to the game of ultimate frisbee but gets its name from Patrick Swayze's character in the movie Roadhouse. As you probably remember, the character in that movie was not someone that you wanted to mess with to say the least! In the song, when you have a "Pocketful of Swayze" you basically have a can of "whoop-..." to unleash (so to speak) so watch out!"
Check it out here .
Thanks Cindy!

Tuesday 12th May 2009: Hello everyone,
Well, they did a brilliant job! Swayze Buddy Cami has been in touch and asked us to post this message to everyone on the website:
~~~~~
Dear Patrick, Lisa and Swayze Buddies,
Thank you for your support and posting our annual walk on your fan
website. Words alone are not enough to show our gratitude. Our
hearts and prayers are with you and your family every day as you
battle this cancer. We lost our mother, Susan Brown to pancreatic
cancer in February 2006 and together as a family we are working to
raise funds and awareness of pancreatic cancer. We wanted to share
with you that team Sue Urchins raised close to $32,000 for the cause
(once company matching hits our account). Every dollar helps us
provide support for pancreatic cancer patients and their families, it
gets us on step closer to earlier detection, better and more effective
treatments, and one day a CURE. We will not stop until we have won
the war against pancreatic cancer. Our voices will be heard in memory
of those who lost the battle and in honor of those still fighting the
battle.
We will continue to pray for all of you everyday. Stay positive,
surround yourself with love, and never never give up hope. Keep kick-
in it, Patrick!
Our Love and Gratitude,
Sue's Urchins
~~~~~
Well done to everyone involved in the walk.
In friendship,
Margaret.
Thursday 23rd April 2009: Hello everyone,
Swayze Buddy Rebecca in England has sent us this link which features an interview with Stacy Widelitz when he recalls Patrick and himself writing "She's Like the Wind". Thanks Rebecca!
Swayze Buddy Cami Brown has requested our help with publicising her fundraising efforts in aid of PanCan. Here is Cami's letter:
"Our website information:

http://pancan.kintera.org/pschicago09/suesurchins (Our Team Name: Sue's Urchins)
Dear Patrick Pals,
On May 2nd, 2009, we will be walking in the honor of those who have lost
their battle with Pancreatic Cancer and those who are still in the fight.
We need to bring hope to those who are battling this disease. I have lost
three family member to this cancer. My mother-in-law, Susan Brown who fought
this disease for two years. My grandmother, Wilma Notson who battled in for
three months. My uncle who survived two months past the diagnosis. We need
to raise our voices and be heard. Please pass this email on to friends and
family, so they hear our voice. We hope that you will walk with us or make a
donation to further research and a cure. There is no greater gift than
hope, let us be part of that hope.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the very few cancers for which survival has not
improved substantially in the last 30 years. The five-year survival rate was
2 percent in the 1970s and is just 5 percent now. The overall five-year
survival rate for all forms of cancer is 66 percent. Pancreatic cancer is
severely under-researched and under-funded. Unlike many cancers, no early
detection tools or effective treatments exist for pancreatic cancer. Part of
the problem is that the National Cancer Institute allocates just 2 percent
of its funding for this leading cancer killer.
Thank you for your time and for forwarding this email. My goal is to
generate awareness and support for PanCAN. Together we can make a
difference.
In Hope,
Cami"

cancer.
Please check out the memorial site I have made and donate if you like.
