Losing a young patient on the operating table in Houston, Texas was the last straw for Dr. Max Lowe. He chucks it all in
and takes off to "find himself", tackling many personal demons along the way. He lands up in Calcutta.
Max is beaten up by thieves and helped by strangers. He is taken to the City of Joy, a bustee in the care of Nurse Joan
Bethal. At first he resists Joanīs attempts to recruit him as a doctor for the Bustee and Leper Colony, but he eventually
becomes involved with the clinic. When his plane ticket home is confiscated, and he has no way out of his predicament.
This is considered to be Patrickīs finest work, and as his character grows, he becomes aware of the realities and loves
and lives of the people heīs caring for, and what matters in life.
